Will Smith is returning to the world of I Am Legend, with Michael B Jordan set to co-star in a prequel movie to the 2007 hit.
Will Smith has ummed and aahed about sequels in the past, dropping out for instance from the follow-up to 1990s juggernaut Independent Day in favour of starring in Suicide Squad. And for a long time, there was discussion about a prequel/sequel to 2007’s gigantic hit I Am Legend, that seemed to have fizzled out.
Well, nearly 15 years later, that project now seems to be doing whatever the opposite of fizzling out is, with Smith picking it back up. He’s attached to appear in what’s set to be a prequel movie to I Am Legend, an idea that’s been doing the rounds for a good decade so far. What’s more, Michael B Jordan is now going to co-star with him in the new film.
The 2007 I Am Legend was the third particular telling of that story (based on the 1950s novel from Richard Matheson) on the big screen, and the new version will bring back screenwriter Akiva Goldsman too.
Whether Francis Lawrence will return to direct the film is unclear, but this is nonetheless a project very much on the Warner Bros slate. As we hear more, we’ll let you know.
(And the alternate ending on the disc is much better, if you’re thinking of revisiting the 2007 version…)
