Animation in both Ireland and Northern Ireland has taken a collaborative step forwards with a new landmark deal.

The animation industry in both Ireland and Northern Ireland has been steadily growing in stature over the last few years, achieving ever more impressive feats. Led by production companies such as Cartoon Saloon, the team behind Secret Of The Kells and Wolfwalkers, other animation houses in both parts of Ireland have sprung up to create a vibrant and exciting industry that now employs thousands of people.

Both Ireland and Northern Ireland have a rich history of animation, but news today suggests that collaboration between the two may become easier in the future with the announcement that Animation Ireland, Animation UK and Northern Ireland Screen have today agreed a deal that will open membership to studios based in Northern Ireland. These are the trade associations that represent the interests of each respective nation, but the news that Northern Ireland animation houses will now be able to enjoy ‘double representation’ can only be a good thing for the the animation industry as a whole.

The two associations will also share training and events, furthering opportunities for the animation industries and hopefully continuing the trend for growth in the sector which has seen Irish animation studios grow by roughly a third in the last three years alone. All parties involved should be commended for their forward thinking and we look forward to seeing more great animated films emerge from that part of the world in the coming years.
