James Cameron confirms plans for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc releases of both The Abyss and True Lies this year: more here.

So then. Last year, we ran an article at this site – that you can find here – examining the pretty poor state of home entertainment releases for the films of James Cameron. In particular, the absence of The Abyss and True Lies on Blu-ray, yet alone 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray remains notable.

At the end of last year though, a breakthrough. Cameron admitted that The Abyss was finally going to get its first physical media release in two decades by March of this year. And whilst that’s been slightly delayed, that remains on the card.

Earlier this year too, True Lies popped up on Prime Video and Disney+ in HD. This suggested some movement there as well.

Well, there has been. The fine folks at The Digital Bits – which has been following this story even longer than us – has now revealed that Cameron was asked about the releases of both films at this year’s Critics’ Choice Awards, and he’s confirmed that not only is The Abyss coming, but True Lies as well. The pair will both be on 4K disc – and presumably Blu-ray tooin “the second half of 2023”.

It’s been a very long time, and there may yet be further delays. But with two Avatar films and Titanic also coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in 2023, it looks like it’s going to be the year of Cameron where physical media is concerned.

As always, more as we hear it…
