Fans of the globetrotting National Treasure franchise now have a glimmer of hope, with the potential of a National Treasure 3.

For years, fans of 2004’s National Treasure and it’s sequel, 2007’s Book of Secrets, have been left in suspense. Just what is on Page 47? We are now closer than ever to finding out.

In a Reddit Q&A, one fan asked Bruckheimer about a potential third instalment. Instead of refusing to comment one way or the other, which has been the status of the film for over ten years, Bruckheimer instead confirmed that “I love Nicolas, he’s a brilliant actor and we are currently working on a script for National Treasure“.

The films, directed by Jon Turtletaub, follow the treasure hunting exploits of the quite wonderfully named Benjamin Franklin Gates, as played by Nicholas Cage. With help from Justin Bartha’s Riley Poole and Diane Kruger’s Dr. Abigail Chase, Gates uses his intellect to decipher clues left everywhere from the Declaration of Independence to the Statues of Liberty.

It is a good time to be a National Treasure fan, as there is also a spin off series heading to Disney+. Focussing on a much younger cast, is it to be headlined by newcomer Lisette Alexis. However, it will share continuity with the films, not least because it is being developed and written by original scribes Marianne and Cormac Wibberly, and Bartha is reprising his role. The series is due to premiere on the streaming service next year.

The first two films are tremendous fun, and we can only hope that Bruckheimer’s enthusiasm drives the long awaited third instalment forward.
