Iron Fist’s Jessica Henwick may be taking the lead in the new Matrix movie.

Another day, another piece of news on The Matrix 4 has dropped, offering yet another tantalising glimpse of what the film might look like. It’s been widely reported that director Lana Wachowski is looking to fill the film’s lead role with a female Neo-type character, and furthermore, that Jessica Henwick, star of the Netflix adaptation of Marvel’s Iron Fist, was impressive enough in auditions to take the role.

Whilst nothing has been confirmed yet, what is certain is that Henwick most definitely has the martial arts prowess to lead a Matrix film. Although some of the martial arts sequences in Iron Fist were seen to be lacking in the quality department, that can’t be said of any of the scenes featuring her character, Colleen Wing. Henwick has been making some interesting moves in Hollywood of late before this announcement, and next year will feature in projects as diverse as On The Rocks, the new Sofia Coppola project, as well as the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong.

The Matrix 4 meanwhile, continues to take shape and is set for a 2022 release, also featuring original cast members Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss alongside newcomers Neil Patrick Harris and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, whilst Jada Pinkett-Smith is also rumoured to reprise her role as Niobe.

Whilst the second and third entries have their admirers, if Wachowski and her collaborators can recreate the magic of that legendary 1999 original, The Matrix 4 will be one of the event movies of the year. More as we have it.
