Joaquin Phoenix is to join up with the director of Hereditary and Midsommmmmaaaaarrrrr for his next film.

Well, we’re not quite sure how to feel about this news. On one hand it’s exciting, very exciting indeed, the thought of one of this generation’s finest actors teaming up with a director whose two films so far have excelled at subjecting audiences to a particularly unique brand of uneasiness.

On the other hand? The thought of one of this generation’s finest actors teaming up with a director whose two films so far have excelled at subjecting audiences to a particularly unique brand of uneasiness? Well it makes us, well… a bit afraid frankly about what they might do to us.

Following very positive responses to Hereditary and Midsommar, Ari Aster’s next film is reported to be both ‘an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time’ whilst also being ‘a surrealist horror film set in an alternate present’. Rumours have been circling for a while that Phoenix was boarding the project, but now it has been confirmed and on the surface this feels like an incredibly good match.

A24 is distributing the film, which reportedly will shoot before Phoenix takes on the role of Napoleon Bonaparte in Ridley Scott’s Kitbag. Scott has to shoot his Gucci killer drama first, meaning Aster and Phoenix can shoot their new movie – entitled Disappointment Blvd. – in the interim.

We’ll bring you more news on this one as we hear it.
