Joker 2: director Todd Phillips on a possible sequel

A Joker sequel hasn’t officially been given the greenlight yet, but its director has been chatting about it.

Made for under $60m and firmly on its way to $1bn at the box office (a landmark is should get through this coming weekend), director Todd Phillips’ Joker movie – starring Joaquin Phoenix – is the hit of the season.

It’s one of the few movies this year to completely eclipse box office expectations, and it’s one too that its creatives have been open to a sequel to.

Todd Phillips in particular has been chatting to the Los Angeles Times about a potential Joker 2, with Phoenix apparently raising the idea of a follow-up just weeks into shooting. It’s a movie the director is open to making too, “but it couldn’t just be this wild and crazy movie about the ‘crown prince of crime’”, he said.

He added that “it would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that this does. Because I think that’s ultimately why the movie connected, it’s what’s going on underneath. So many movies are about the spark, and this is about the powder. If you could capture that again in a real way, that would be interesting”.

There are no firm plans at this moment to get moving on a follow-up, but surely given those box office receipts, this is a case of when rather than if Joker 2 happens. We’ll keep you posted.
