Judd Apatow confirms he’s looking to reunite Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd for This Is 50, and that now is the time to make it.

There’s something of Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy to what writer/producer/director Judd Apatow is up to. In the movie Knocked Up, he introduced characters played by Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd, a married couple whose relationship has its ups and downs.

After Knocked Up hit big, he spun those two characters out into a movie of their own, This Is 40. It was a modest success, although as Seth Rogen once quipped, it perhaps should have been called ‘this is 40 minutes too long’.

Still, it’s a film with merits to it, and Apatow – now that he’s heading towards his mid-50s – is exploring revisiting the two characters on screen for a third time. He’s confirmed to The Wrap, whilst promoting his upcoming Netflix movie The Bubble, that he’s now working out just what This Is 50 will look like.

“I couldn’t have done it five years ago and I can’t do it five years from now”, he argued, “so I’ve been outlining that and hope it’s something that we get to do”.

He adds that he’s happy at how This Is 40 has aged, and says “it always feels like everyone watches it when they turn 40 and they go ‘oh, I understand it all now’. So I’m enthusiastic about putting that together”.

More on the film as we hear it. Expect Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd to return…
