A further film in the Before series of movies doesn’t seem to be getting any closer, as Julie Delpy turns the feature down.

Few trilogies come close to matching the Before series of films for my money. Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight – released with a nine year gap between each – follow Julie Delpy’s Celine and Ethan Hawke’s Jesse, and the relationship between those characters over time. Directed by Richard Linklater, the last of the films arrived in 2013, which means that to stick to the timeline of the features, the next would be due next year.

However, there had already been chat from Ethan Hawke suggesting that a fourth movie wouldn’t follow the nine year cycle. Now it comes to light that Julie Delpy had been approached about a fourth film, but turned the project down.

In a chat with Telerama, Delpy admits that she’s been considering leaving the industry altogether, as she struggles to get her latest film as director – A Dazzling Display Of Splendor, starring Emilia Clarke – off the ground. She admits that “I said no to Richard Linklater for the fourth part of the Before films. I thought that maybe I could go back to school. I would make a very good doctor, for example. You give me three symptoms, and I tell you what you are suffering from…But I like to create, to tell stories; it’s stronger than me”.

Delpy’s latest film, My Zoe, is out now. Quite what her next film will be remains to be seen. Just don’t expect it to be Before 4 anytime soon…
