As first reported by Deadline Hollywood, Disney has tapped Dear White People director Justin Simien to direct a new take on The Haunted Mansion.

Director of Dear White People and Bad Hair Justin Simien is tipped to be directing a new film for Disney based on the Haunted Mansion theme park ride.

Some may remember this is not the first time Disney has attempted to draw from the ride. Following the success of the Pirates Of The Caribbean films, The Haunted Mansion was released in 2003 starring Eddie Murphy, however, it failed to reach critical or financial acclaim. This hasn’t stopped Disney from continuing to use its theme park properties as inspiration and it’s clear the House of Mouse is banking on the success of the upcoming Jungle Cruise film starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt to reignite fans passion for this style of film.

The most recent version of the screenplay has been written by Snatched and Ghostbusters (2016) scribe Katie Dippold. Dippold has a history of writing female-led films, also writing buddy cop comedy The Heat, so there’s a possibility that this version of The Haunted Mansion may focus on a female protagonist as opposed to the 2003 film which followed Murphy’s failing husband and father.
