A sequel to the much-loved Labyrinth is finally set to press ahead, with Scott Derrickson directing the long-in-gestation project.

If not quite a piece of film news that’s an absolute bolt out of the blue, this one surely still counts as a surprise. It’s been known for years that a further Labyrinth movie was on the slate of The Jim Henson Company, but it also felt like it was a project often talked about, but not getting any closer to happening.

Well, now it looks like it’s happening.

Scott Derrickson, the director of films such as The Exorcism Of Emily Rose and Doctor Strange is now set to direct the movie. Earlier this year, he departed the Marvel sequel Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness over creative differences.

He’ll direct Labyrinth 2 – as we suspect it won’t be called – based on a screenplay by Maggie Levin. Lisa Henson is producing the film, and on the list of executive producers are Brian Henson, Derrickson and his regular writing and producing partner, C Robert Cargill.

No word yet on when this one is likely to go ahead, but as we hear more, we’ll let you know.
