Legal problems hit xXx 4

Vin Diesel won’t be reprising the role of Xander Cage in a hurry – there’s a legal battle to be resolved before xXx 4 can go ahead.

Vin Diesel doesn’t have too much luck with some of his sequels. When he came to make Riddick – ultimately released in 2013 – the funding was so tight on the project that at one stage, the cast and crew were locked out of the studio for non-payment of bills by the movie’s financiers.

With xXx, his plan had been to return to the character after the belated sequel xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage in 2017. Yet the project appears – from the outside looking in – to have barely moved forward in the three years since. Now we have an idea as to why.

Chinese firm Weying Galaxy has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles against The Collective, arguing that it had an option to buy rights to further xXx sequels from Revolution Studios (the company that had been partly behind the original three films). Problem is, The H Collective also reckons it has those rights. Now, Weying Galaxy argues that The H Collective – are you still following this? – entered into a partnership with it to make the next sequel a joint project. Yet is alleges The H Collective didn’t have all the rights to do so at the time.

Furthermore, it also argues that the approvals Vi Diesel has over elements of the project dilutes the value of the rights anyway.

My head hurts.

The bottom line is that there’s precious little chance of xXx 4 – as it won’t be called – heading into production until all this is sorted out.

The Hollywood Reporter has better lawyers than us, and has thus got a more detailed breakdown of what is alleged to have happened, right here.

What we can legally certainly say is that we found the 4K disc of the last film available online for under £7 if you want it. You can find that here.

More as we hear it.
