Legally Blonde 3, starring Reese Witherspoon, is still on its way: but don’t hold your breath for the planned 2022 release.

15 years after she last played the role, Reese Witherspoon will be returning to the shoes of Elle Woods for Legally Blonde 3. The film was set to release in May of next year, but although we now have an update on the script, with no further casting announced and the film still needing a director, we’re expecting that date to be pushed back.

MGM executive Pamela Abdy has offered an update on the film’s story though, saying that the film “will catch up with Elle as a working mother who has now turned 40. Mindy Kaling and Dan [Goor] are writing it now for Reese [Witherspoon] to star. Reese and Lauren Neustadter are producing with Marc Platt. We’re all developing it together. What does Elle Woods look like at 40? Elle is a mom with a thriving career. We’re looking forward to seeing the script come in sometime in the first quarter.”

The film then ain’t arriving next May. MGM has been pretty bullish about release dates so far, with a previous release date of 2020 sounding highly improbable, even as it was being mooted. Still, more Legally Blonde can’t be a bad thing, so even if we have to wait for this one, you can count us in.
