It looks like the director of Upgrade and The Invisible Man will be taking on The Green Hornet and Kato next.

It’s been the best part of a year since we learned that Leigh Whannell, director of Upgrade and The Invisible Man, had departed his next project, a fresh take on a further character in the Universal stable of monsters, The Wolfman. The film, which is set to star Ryan Gosling is moving ahead with Derek Cianfrance at the helm instead and whilst no reason was given as to why Whannell departed, the choice of a regular Gosling collaborator to replace him suggests that creative differences between star and director may have been an issue.

That’s pure speculation though, but what is for sure is that following two cracking films in the form of Upgrade and The Invisible Man, we were really looking forward to Whannell’s take on the classic monster. Still, at least the Australian filmmaker is still on good terms with Universal as it has been announced that he’s set his next project there.

Whannell will be directing The Green Hornet And Kato for the studio, who are reportedly very happy with a script that David Koepp has written and are keen to fast-track the project into pre-production.

This version of the Green Hornet character will follow the 2011 movie (pictured) that featured Seth Rogen and Jay Chou. The story of The Green Hornet focuses on ‘Britt Reid, owner/publisher of The Daily Sentinel. Armed with knowledge from his sources, weapons, a car known as The Black Beauty, and his trusty aide Kato, Reid became vigilante crime fighter The Green Hornet who is wanted by the police and feared by crooks everywhere.’

No production dates or casting yet, but we’ll keep you posted…
