Mamma Mia 3 is being planned

Mamma Mia! looks like it’s on its way to becoming a trilogy, with early plans in place for a third film in the series.

Whilst the first Mamma Mia! film was a pretty straight adaptation of the hit stage show, in turn based in and around the music of Abba, its sequel really remains something quite special. Taking the structure of The Godfather Part II as its template (really), Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again has an awful lot going on amidst the music and the fun. Both films have been notable box office hits.

And now, there’s talk of a third, to close off the trilogy.

Said talk has come from producer Judy Craymer, who has been chatting with – nnngh, sorry about this – the Daily Mail. She revealed to the hateful outlet that she had been working on a third film pre-pandemic.

“I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog”, she said. She added that “I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it”.

This is the first close to an official word of a third movie in the series, and clearly it still seems a long way off. But still: best not pack that dancing outfit away just yet. And Pierce Brosnan might want to warm up his voice box.
