Mark Kermode’s Secrets Of Cinema: first series returning

The first series of Secrets Of Cinema will be getting a BBC Four repeat, and a return to BBC iPlayer.

Well, here’s some very welcome news in these not very pleasant times. The second full series of Mark Kermode’s Secrets Of Cinema is currently running every Thursday on BBC Four, with two episodes broadcast and one still to go. The episodes will be on the BBC iPlayer service too for the foreseeable future.

However, given that the show is compromised of lots of clips from movies under fair use rights, it does mean that the show is one that can never head to DVD. The sheer cost of clearing all of the clips for a commercial sale would make the project a non-starter. As such, if you want to watch old episodes, iPlayer is your friend. That said, the first series of the show has fallen off the service, in spite of the BBC giving it a longer run than originally planned. But in a terrific piece of news, it’s coming back.

As Doctor Kermode himself has revealed, the entire first series of the show will be getting a repeat on BBC Four once the second series has concluded this week. And after that, the episodes will return to iPlayer, where they’ll hang around for many more months. Do check them out if you haven’t had the pleasure. And be prepared for your to-watch list to expand at speed…
