Master & Commander 2 is finally happening

A new Master & Commander film is on the way, with Patrick Ness hired to pen the screenplay for the new movie: more here.

Well here is a very, very welcome surprise. As we discussed in a podcast episode a little while ago, there were plans following the 2003 release of Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World to bring more of Patrick O’Brian’s stories in the series to the screen. The box office returns for the expensive blockbuster, starring Russell Crowe, sadly stopped those plans in their metaphorical tracks.

Now though comes the news that a fresh Master & Commander outing is on the way. It’s going to be a prequel story this time around, and Patrick Ness will be penning the screenplay for it. It’s unlikely to involve either the original director Peter Weir nor Crowe, but never say never. It’s in development now though at 20th Century – or what we oldies used to call Fox before Disney snapped it up – and with a bit of luck, this one will come together and we’ll finally be able to see more of the adventure of Jack Aubrey on the screen.

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more. For now, we very much like this news.
