Matilda: the stage musical is finally becoming a film

The award-winning Matilda musical goes before the cameras later this year.

It’s been planned for some time, but a screen version of the hugely successful and quite brilliant Matilda musical is now heading to the big screen.

The musical, based in turn on the book by Roald Dahl, has been playing in the West End of London since 2011, winning umpteen awards and enjoying performances too right across the world. The book for the show was written by Dennis Kelly, the music by Tim Minchin and it was directed by Matthew Warchus. And now that same team is bringing it to the movies.

Warchus last directing the quite wonderful Pride, and of course Matilda has been filmed before, with Danny DeVito directing a much-loved adaptation of it.

This new version will be filming from August through to the end of the year in the UK, and the search is now on for someone to take the title role.

Working Title Films is backing the project, and it’s likely that we’ll be seeing the movie towards the end of 2021.

There have been plans for some time to bring Matilda to the big screen in its musical form, but it’s believed some contractual rights issues needed to expire before that could happen. Now? It’s full steam again…
