The cast for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer biopic looks like it may be one of the starriest ensembles of 2023.

Last week we learned that A Quiet Place's Emily Blunt was deep in negotiations to star opposite Cillian Murphy in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film about Robert J Oppenheimer, the ‘father of the atomic bomb’. Whilst Nolan is known for re-using the same actors throughout his films, this will mark Blunt’s first collaboration with the director. If reports this morning are accurate, two more actors will be joining the director in sizeable roles for the first time too (careful phrasing there, spoiler fans), as it’s being reported that Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr are in talks to feature in the movie.

Whereas Murphy has previously worked with Nolan on Inception, Dunkirk and all three instalments of his Dark Knight trilogy, this would Downey’s first collaboration with the director. Damon has worked with Nolan before.

Cillian Murphy will lead the film as Oppenheimer, a scientist who became deeply remorseful of his actions. Blunt, who most recently starred in Jungle Cruise opposite Dwayne Johnson, hasn’t yet had her role unannounced. We do know that the plot will be loosely based on the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

The film is set to release on July 21st 2023, meaning we might hear more casting news soon as this impressive ensemble continues to grow. We’ll keep you posted as it happens.
