The 2004 movie Mean Girls became a Broadway musical – and now the Broadway musical of the film is becoming a movie itself.

Well, in fairness, it was the likes of Hairspray that did the pathfinding here. John Waters’ original film made the jump to Broadway and the West End, becoming a hugely successful stage musical. The stage musical then became a film in its own right, that was also a success.

The Producers then followed the same path, although the film of The Producers musical didn’t quite hit in the same way. That notwithstanding, Mean Girls is the next to have a go.

The 2004 original movie, directed by Mark Waters and penned by Tina Fey, was pretty instantly a firm favourite, as well as a commercial success. It made the jump to Broadway in 2018, and now Mean Girls: The Musical is completing the loop and heading to the big screen.

Arturo Perez Jr and Samantha Jayne have been hired to direct the new film, and Tina Fey is on board penning the screenplay once again. She’s also producing, along with Lorne Michaels.

No word yet on when to expect the film, but expect casting news to follow soon.
