The loss of Richard Donner means that Mel Gibson is now set to direct Lethal Weapon 5, Gibson has told an event in London.

Over the weekend, Mel Gibson was in London for an event by the name of, well, ‘An Experience With Mel Gibson’. This is one of those things where you put on a posh outfit, pay a lot of money, and watch a star being interviewed about their work and career. Which, by the sounds of it, is just what happened.

Multiple reports from that event (here’s one) now reveal that Gibson talked about Lethal Weapon 5 at the event, a movie that was set to be directed – just as the other four had been – by Richard Donner. Donner sadly passed earlier this year though, and the assumption was that the fifth Lethal Weapon movie had come to an end with his death.

Apparently, not so.

Gibson told the ‘intimate’ crowd that Donner had made a request to him before he died: “listen kid, I if kick the bucket, you will do it”, adding “he did ask me to do it, and at the time I didn’t say anything”. But Donner had told Warner Bros his plan, as well as producer Lauren Shuler Donner, to whom he was married. And it sounds like it’s all now in traction.

Should the project go ahead, Gibson will co-star once again with Danny Glover. Don’t be surprised if this goes to HBO Max in the US, rather than getting a cinema release though.

We’ll keep you posted…
