The much-loved 1980s buddy road movie Midnight Run – starring Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin – is getting a proper sequel, with Regina Hall on board.

Few buddy action comedies of the 1980s are held in quite the esteem as Martin Brest’s Midnight Run, the road movie that paired Charles Grodin and Robert De Niro in the lead role. Released in 1988, it was actually followed by a trio of low profile follow-ups – Another Midnight Run, Midnight Runaround, Midnight Run For Your Life (really) – but now it’s getting a full, proper sequel.

Universal Pictures has hired Regina Hall to co-star in whatever Midnight Run 2 ends up being called, and thus far Robert De Niro has agreed to come on board as producer. Whether he’ll appear before the camera remains to be seen. Charles Grodin, of course, we sadly lost earlier this year.

Aeysha Carr is penning the script for the new movie, although we don’t have further details at the moment regarding who’s going to direct, and who’ll be starring alongside Hall (she’s also producing too). We just know that after years of on and off conversations about whether the movie would happen, it now looks like it’s happening.

As we hear more of course, we’ll let you know.
