Another unique Universal Monsters movie is on the way, this time with the brilliant Chris Miller and Phil Lord producing.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are adding to their already busy slate, with the news that the duo have attached themselves to an untitled Universal monster movie. Their Jump Street collaborator, Channing Tatum has also joined the project and will star.

Deadline reported over the weekend that the duo will be producing the film rather than directing it, with the style being that of a tongue-in-cheek thriller set within the world of Universal’s monster characters. The script is currently being penned by Wes Tooke, the writer of 2019’s Midway.

Whether directing or producing, Miller and Lord are generally seen as possessing something of a golden touch, especially when it comes to reinventing existing properties in a way that delights and surprises audiences. We’ve seen it with the Jump Street, LEGO and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse films. Seeing what they elect to do with one or more of the characters from the beloved Universal monsters stable will hopefully be another joy to behold.
Since the critical reaction to The Mummy prompted the collapse of its much-feted Dark Universe in 2017 before the planned series of films ever really got off the ground, Universal is finding success and increasingly interesting creative footing with their monster characters. This year’s retelling of The Invisible Man, directed by Leigh Whannell offered an interesting and different take on the classic HG Wells story. Whilst Ryan Gosling is set to be directed by Whannell in an updated version of The Wolfman, a monster character that is really overdue a truly great horror flick.
No director has been named as yet for this new movie, but as soon as we hear more details on the project, including which monster(s) will be appearing, you can be sure we’ll let you know.
