Audio of Tom Cruise tearing into crew members on the set of Mission: Impossible 7 over Covid safety has been leaked online.

Overnight, courtesy of the particularly unpleasant outlet that is The Sun, audio recorded secretly on the set of Mission: Impossible 7 made it out into the wider world. That audio features Tom Cruise berating crew members on the set of the movie for not following Covid protocols, and threatening them with being fired for a repeat offence.

I’ve no urge in the slightest to link to The Sun, and it’s not hard to find the dialogue online. But I’m fascinated as to the motivations of the person leaking the footage, because I can’t help but think it’s one of those things where nobody comes out wonderfully well.

On the one hand, it’s hard to argue with Cruise’s vociferous rant about the need for safety on set, and the lengths that he and the team are having to go to in order to keep the film moving, and people in a job. On the other, it’s a leaked audio of another person being shouted at on a film set. Having being in jobs where I’ve been on the receiving end of people shouting in my face, I must admit I shuddered at that bit.

But still: it’s gratifying that safety is being taken so seriously, and there’s an observation to be made here about film companies working to stricter standards than national governments.

Tom Cruise has yet to respond to the leaking of the audio.

Mission: Impossible 7 continues production, with an eye on its November 19th 2021 release date.
