The franchise lives to fight another day as Mortal Kombat 2 confirms its director: more on the film here.

Mortal Kombat was perhaps a surprising hit for Warner Brothers last year. Opening at No. 1 at the box office and becoming the most streamed title on HBO Max, it is unsurprising that the studio is  quickly pressing ahead with a sequel.

Based on the hit video game franchise, the first film spent over a decade in development hell, and while it was critically slated in many quarters it was praised for the fight sequences.

Director Simon McQuoid, who made his directorial debut with Mortal Kombat, is returning for the sequel, with Jeremy Slater penning the script.
