The new Mortal Kombat film is underway, ahead of its 2021 debut.

One of the earliest movies to make a success out of bringing a videogame to the big screen – and it’s hardly a crowded shelf of DVDs it sits on – is Mortal Kombat. It was director Paul W S Anderson in the mid-1990s who enjoyed success with the first film, that was followed by a less successful sequel.

Now, we get the reboot.

This time, Simon McQuoid is directing, and he’s working from a screenplay that’s been penned by Greg Russo. Filming has got underway on the new movie in September. In the cast are Joe Taslim, Ludi Lim, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Chin Han, Hiroyuki Sanada, Max Huang, Sisi Stringer and Lewis Tan.

And the release date for the film has shuffled forward too. It was due at the start of March 2021, but Warner Bros has now shifted it forward to January 15th 2021. That’s the US release date, we should note, but we’d be surprised if the UK didn’t follow suit.

More as we hear it.
