The dangerous world of big wave surfing will be the focus for the next movie from director Niki Caro.

Mulan director, Niki Caro, has become attached to a new project which sounds intriguing. The film, which is as yet untitled, will follow the fortunes of several female big wave surfers who form close ties whilst surfing some of the world’s most dangerous breaks.

The struggle for the women to find equal footing with men in big wave surfing was the subject of a book by Daniel Duane, The Fight For Gender Equality In One of the Most Dangerous Sports on Earth, which followed the paths of female surfers, Bianca Valenti, Andrea Moller, Paige Alms and Keala Kennelly. The film will be based on Duane’s work.

Caro is known for pushing for gender equality off-screen too, using a female-centred production team during production of The Zookeeper’s Wife. Star Jessica Chastain was so impressed by the experience, she was moved to write an open essay about the experience. Caro’s take is that the women selected were simply the best people for the job: “I wish I could tell you that it was just a great big conspiracy of women, but it wasn’t. That’s never my intention,” Caro told Indiewire. “I hire the best people for the job, it just so happened that many of them were female.”

No casting has been revealed yet, but it has been announced that Charlize Theron will be producing with her Denver & Delilah production company. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
