Nia Vardalos steps up to the director’s chair, as My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 starts filming in Athens: more here.

The original My Big Fat Greek Wedding was at one stage the biggest independent film of all time at the US box office. Released in 2002, and written by and starring Nia Vardalos, the movie was a sleeper hit sensation. A spin-off TV series quickly followed, but it took a little longer to get a full sequel, the cunningly titled My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. That arrived in 2016, and didn’t do quite the same level of business. However, it’s clearly done enough to trigger turning the whole saga into a trilogy, as we now learn that production is underway on My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.

Again Vardalos is at the heart of this, as this time she’s not only starring but has stepped up to the director’s chair. One person missing from the returning ensemble is Michael Constantine, who passed last year. The new film will be dedicated to him.

Vardalos has been trying to get the new film going for some time, with Covid inevitably delaying things. For now though, here’s the announcement video that Vardalos posted, announcing that production on the project had begun…
