Gwendoline Christie headlines a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream from the National Theatre, that you can watch for free from tonight.

Every Thursday night the National Theatre, for the past three months and change, has been putting one of its filmed productions onto its YouTube channel to stream and watch for free. These are plays and shows that it had previously beamed into cinemas, and it’s been one of the few upsides of lockdown that so much of its archive has been available.

This week’s production is a take on William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, starring Gwendoline Christie and Hammed Animashaun.

It’ll go live on the National Theatre YouTube channel from 7pm tonight. You can watch it below, or click directly though to YouTube…

You’ve got a week to watch it, before another production takes its place at 7pm next Thursday. Note that this one comes with a 12A certificate.

The official synopsis – if you want a brush up on your Shakespeare – reads…

A feuding fairy King and Queen cross paths with four runaway lovers and a troupe of actors trying to rehearse a play. As their dispute grows, the magical royal couple meddle with mortal lives in the forest, to hilarious, but dark, consequences.
