The popular historical drama The Last Kingdom is getting the movie treatment in addition to its upcoming fifth and final series.

Since it moved from the BBC to Netflix, the historical drama The Last Kingdom, has proven increasingly popular, extending its run into five seasons. Whilst the fifth and final season will conclude the show’s story of ‘late 9th century England, focusing on the resistance of the Kingdom of Wessex to ongoing Viking incursions to Southern England’, it has been announced that we’ll be getting a spin-off film too, titled Seven Kings Must Die.

The Last Kingdom is based on the Saxon Stories series of books from Bernard Cornwell. Whilst the fifth series will fully conclude the story of Uhtred, producer Nigel Marchant has revealed that there is “one more story” that the production wanted to tell. That’s the story that’d heading to the big screen.

No release date has yet been announced but filming is scheduled to begin next year.

Whilst The Last Kingdom will be coming to an end, Bernard Cornwell fans can keep one eye on Wales’ own Bad Wolf Studios, who has had an adaptation of the author’s Warlord Chronicles in active development since last last year. That series of books retells the Arthurian story from the perspective of one of his humble warriors. More on all of this in due course…
