Netflix’s Chicken Run sequel is titled Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget – Zachary Levi lends his voice for the role of Rocky.
First announced in 2018, details have finally emerged on Netflix’s sequel to Chicken Run. The beloved Aardman animated film was released in 2000, and it sounds like the new film will pick up pretty much exactly where the original left off. The sequel is titled Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget, and will feature many of the same characters, albeit with a mostly new voice cast.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the sequel will be released on Netflix in 2023, so not too long to wait now. There have also been some changes to the cast. Mel Gibson, who was going to voice leading man Rocky, has apparently flown the coop. He is replaced by Shazam! actor Zachary Levi. Ginger has also been recast, with Thandiwe Newton taking over the role from Julia Sawalha. When this news was revealed in 2020, Sawalha accused the films’ producers of ageism.
According to the official synopsis, Rocky and Ginger will have a daughter named Molly, and she will be voiced by Game Of Thrones actor Bella Ramsey. Some of Chicken Run’s original stars will be reprising their roles, including Jane Horrocks as Babs, Imelda Staunton as Bunty, and Lynn Ferguson as Mac. The new cast includes Harry Potter actor David Bradley, comedian Romesh Ranganathan, and Daniel Mays.
Set after their daring escape from Tweedy’s Farm, the chickens have finally found paradise on a secluded island. But when she hears of a dangerous threat to all chickens on the mainland, she and her friends risk everything to come to their aid. This time, they’re breaking in!
Sam Fell (who helmed Flushed Away and ParaNorman) will be directing, with the script co-written by Karey Kirkpatrick, John O’Farrell, and Rachel Tunnard. Steve Pegram and Leyla Hobart are producing.
Chicken Run: Rise Of The Nugget is part of a creative collaboration between Aardman and Netflix, and it doesn’t end there. It has also been revealed that a new Wallace & Gromit film is in the works. Nick Park is directing alongside Merlin Crossingham, who worked on Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit and Early Man. The film will premiere globally on Netflix, but will have its UK debut on the BBC.
The story will focus on Gromit’s concern after Wallace begins to rely too heavily on his inventions. Events spiral out of control when he creates a ‘smart gnome’ that develops a mind of its own. Gromit must fight on Wallace’s behalf, otherwise he may never be able to invent again. There are no details on the voice cast yet.
Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget will be released on Netflix in 2023. More news on the untitled Wallace & Gromit film as we hear it.
