Nicolas Cage as Dracula? We’ve never been more ready for a film to enter production.

Renfield, the upcoming film directed by Chris McKay, is set to star Nicolas Cage as Dracula, with the immortal bloodsucker’s crazed henchman (that’d be Renfield) portrayed by Nicholas Hoult. The film will explore Renfield’s rather problematic relationship with Dracula, to whom he is bound by the maddening desire to receive immortal life.

Dexter Fletcher was originally set to direct the film, but it was announced earlier this year that The LEGO Batman Movie‘s McKay would be taking over the reins.

We’ve been looking forward to this one for what seems like forever, so the news that the film has officially entered production is music to our ears. Cage hasn’t really worked within the studio system for a decade, his post-Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance career turning into weirder independent fare such as Willy’s Wonderland and the upcoming The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent – marking the kind of left-field shift that we don’t normally see from Oscar-winning actors at this point in their careers.

The film is being positioned, according to Collideras a story that will see Renfield as ‘someone who is sick of being manipulated by Cage’s Prince of Darkness. This all leads to him falling in love with a fiery traffic cop played by Awkwafina, giving the henchmen a newfound purpose in life.’

This project also features Adrian Martinez, Ben Schwartz, and Shohreh Aghdashloo. The screenplay has some great credentials too, having being penned by The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman and Rick And Morty’s Ryan Ridley. We’ll bring you more updates on this one as we continue to hear them.
