Online retailer Zoom has new owners

Universal and Sony no longer own online movie store Zoom (not that one), as Patriot Media Group takes over the business.

The online DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray retailer Zoom.co.uk had appeared to be winding down its operations over the fast few weeks, with many customers spotting the removal of preorders and no new titles being added.

Now comes the confirmation that changes are afoot.

Zoom was set up by Universal Columbia Alliance, a project of Universal Pictures and Sony Pictures in the UK. That’s why in its early years it was primarily selling discs distributed by those two companies. However, Universal and Warner Bros merged their disc distribution outfits last year, and split up territories around the world. Warner Bros now oversees the UK, and that left Zoom a little bit left out in the cold (given that Warner Bros has its own online store, that it’s been adding plenty of titles to).

Zoom, as of today, is now being run by the Patriot Media Group, about whom we don’t know an awful lot. It’s asked, not unreasonably, for a little bit of time to get the site restocked again, and if it’s going to keep the online etailer up and running, then all power to them. We hope that staff haven’t been affected during the transition.

You can take a look at the Zoom site here, although it’s more likely worth checking back in a couple of weeks once Patriot properly has its feet under the table.
