Paul King confirms that he won’t be returning to direct the third Paddington movie, which remains in development.

Since lots of us saw the wonderful, wonderful Paddington 2 at the end of 2017, we’ve been awaited news as to when director Paul King and his team would be bringing Paddington 3 to the screen. Well, in the new issue of Empire magazine, we’ve finally got some more news, but it’s not quite what most of us were looking to hear.

On the upside, it’s definite that Paddington 3 is in development and will press ahead at some point. On the significant downside, it’s now been confirmed by the man himself that Paul King will not be directing this time around.

In the magazine’s new issue, King says that “at some point, you just have to stop”, adding “it might be time for somebody else to do a twist on it”.

Instead, he’s likely to focus his attentions on his slate of other projects, including a mooted Willy Wonka reboot/remake.

As for Paddington 3, he will remain on board as executive producer, and it sounds as though plans are afoot for an ongoing franchise beyond that too. No idea on timescales as of yet, and as we hear more, we’ll let you know.
