Once upon a time, director John Woo pitched a new Face/Off movie to Paramount.

Back in September, news broke that Paramount Pictures was pressing ahead with a remake of the much-loved 90s action film, Face/Off. The 1997 film starred, of course, Nicolas Cage and John Travolta, with John Woo directing.

The remake of the film remains uncast at this stage, although the internet has not been shy about suggesting potential duos to take on the lead roles this time  and swap their mushes around. But it’s now been confirmed by the man himself that John Woo won’t be directing the new take on the story.

In fact, he’s gone a bit further than that. In a conversation at the Hawaii International Film Festival, where he was accepting a lifetime achievement award, Woo revealed that he had once upon a time pitched a Face/Off 2 to Paramount Pictures. Even though he didn’t give further details, it seems clear that the idea for some reason didn’t pass muster with studio bosses.

Woo added that he hadn’t been told by Paramount about the forthcoming reboot, and it sounds like he found out the same way as the rest of us. Not that he wishes the project ill-will. He also told the audience that he was glad a new Face/Off was being made.

No word yet on a release date or casting for the film, mind. But we’ll keep you posted.
