Glasgow Film Festival winner Sweetheart announces its UK theatrical release date in September.

Marley Morrison’s award-winning debut feature Sweetheart will be getting a UK cinema release on the 24th September, courtesy of Peccadillo Pictures.

A sharply observed coming-of-age comedy starring newcomer Nell Barlow, the film also stars Jo Hartley (This is England) as her long suffering but clueless mum. A festival favourite, it has already debuted at the BFI Flare LGBTQ+ Film Festival and won the Audience Award at the Glasgow Film Festival & Best First Feature at Inside Out Toronto.

The plot, if we’ve got your attention – Socially awkward AJ (Nell Barlow) is on holiday with her overbearing family in a caravan park in Dorset. She dresses for concealment and is determined not to have fun, until she meets and unexpectedly falls for the free-spirited lifeguard Isla (Ella Rae Smith), who might just be the girl of her dreams.

The film was commissioned through the Film London’s Microwave scheme backed by the BFI (using funds from the National Lottery) and BBC Films and produced by Hazey Jane Films.

A charming British comedy that isn’t afraid to wear its heart on its sleeve, it’s definitely one to add to the watchlist.

Sweetheart is released in UK cinemas on the 24th September.
