Peter Dinklage to star in Legendary’s Toxic Avenger reboot

The 1980s cult hero The Toxic Avenger is returning in what looks like a big-budget contemporary reboot by Legendary Pictures.

Well who saw this one coming? It appears that Toxie, the beloved cult hero of the 1984 movie The Toxic Avenger, is getting the big budget remake treatment, courtesy of Legendary Pictures.

What’s more, Peter Dinklage, who continues to deftly mix big-budget fare with acclaimed indie material, has been tapped to star, according to Deadline.

The original 1984 version of The Toxic Avenger was an endearingly-schlocky, low-budget B-movie from Troma that firmly fell into the ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ variety, earning it cult status. Toxie would go on to star in several sequels, a musical and even get his own Marvel comic. Although it’s unlikely that Toxie will turn up in the MCU, but who knows? After all, Howard the Duck made it there…

Little else is known about the project currently, apart from that it will be a contemporary updating, so expect some modern commentary on environmental destruction.

Also announced is Maicon Blair, who is set to direct. Blair most recently helmed the excellent I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore and is currently in production with Brothers, starring Josh Brolin and yes, Peter Dinklage.

We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
