Pixar is  hopeful that its 2022 slate will make a rightful return to the big screen, as its latest movie debuts on Disney+ this weekend.

Pixar insiders are reportedly hopeful that their next film, Turning Red, will be the first movie by the studio to debut in cinemas since the pandemic first broke out. Although Onward was released in cinemas in some territories, lockdown forced it onto Disney+ within weeks, whilst Soul debuted on the streaming platform. Pixar’s new film, Luca, debuts on Disney+ this very weekend.

Turning Red will ‘tell the story of a young teen named Mei Lee who turns into a red panda whenever she gets too excited.’ The film will be directed by Domee Shi who helmed the Oscar-winning Pixar animated short, Bao.

We certainly hope Pixar makes it back to the big screen in 2022. Whilst we certainly enjoyed Soul and co. from the comfort of our own homes, a Pixar release always feels like it should be watched on a colossal screen with lot of people to share the experience. The studio has reiterated that the safety of its audiences is the most important factor (although Cruella and Black Widow are getting cinema options), so whilst no decision has been made yet, fingers are crossed.
