Before April ends, you’ll have the opportunity to return to world of Soul with a brand new short film from Pixar.
If you’re a fan of Soul, Pixar’s latest film, which launched on Disney+, then you’ll be happy to discover that you’re going to get the opportunity to dive into that world once more, with the announcement that a short animated prequel, 22 vs. Earth, is coming to Disney+.
The short, which is directed by Soul editor, Kevin Nolting, will debut on April 30th and follow the fortunes of Tina Fey’s character, soul 22, examining why the sceptical character might not want to travel to Earth.
As Nolting puts it, “while making Soul, we talked about the why of a new soul not wanting to live on Earth, but it didn’t ultimately belong in that movie. 22 vs. Earth was a chance to explore some of the unanswered questions we had about why 22 was so cynical.”
As in the full-length film, some real thinking has gone into some deeper philosophical questions about the nature of existence. Nolting explains that “as a fairly cynical person myself, it felt like perfect material. I think the new souls make the short so fun — the contrast of their pure innocence and delight with the cynical expectations of 22. The other new souls are what 22 once was before she took another path—purely innocent, blank slates to be guided by the counsellors in their mostly uneventful journey to the earth portal. 22 sees an opening in that and attempts to guide them herself into her way of thinking.”
It certainly sounds like an intriguing story and we won’t pass up the chance for some more Soul. The full-length film, which released at the end of 2020, is up for three awards at the Oscars on Sunday night, including Best Animated Feature.
