Will Smith and Kevin Hart are to star in a new take on John Hughes’ Planes, Trains & Automobiles, it’s been revealed.

Didn’t see this one coming, in truth. The much-loved 1987 John Hughes comedy Planes, Trains & Automobiles – from writer and director John Hughes – brought together the comedy talents of Steve Martin and the late John Candy, and it’s a regular Thanksgiving favourite for a start. It tells the story of two people thrown together as they struggle to get home when their flights have been cancelled. It remains very funny too.

Now, it’s getting the Hollywood remake treatment.

The new take on the film will feature Will Smith and Kevin Hart in the lead roles, although who’s taking the Steve Martin role and who takes the John Candy part remains to be seen. The most obvious way around to do it would see Hart taking on Candy’s character, but perhaps the most interesting way would be to turn that around.

We wait and see. What we do know is that Paramount Pictures is backing the production, and that Smith and Hart will be amongst its producers. Aeysha Carr is penning the screenplay for the new film, although it’s not clear as of yet who’s going to be directing.

More as we hear it.
