The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format gets a boost, with confirmed inclusion in the upcoming PlayStation 5 console.

It’s still being regarded by many as the last optical disc format for movies, but 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is set to get a shot in the arm next year, with the news that Sony’s PlayStation 5 console is set to support the format.

The posh-sounding console will come with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive as part and parcel of its spec, and you’ll be able to play movie discs on the machine.

The news came as fuller details of the incoming console were revealed. It’s set to land in stores in time for Christmas 2020, and the games for the machine themselves will be sold on 100GB optical discs.

Whether this affects the 4K disc movie market in any meaningful way remains to be seen. But it is something of a positive step for the format, which has seen disc sales slightly increasing over the course of the year.

We have regular 4K coverage in every issue of Film Stories magazine, incidentally. Can’t blame me for plugging that, right…?
