Plans remain afoot for a new Princess Diaries film – it’s just it’s unlikely to be Princess Diaries 3 anymore.
It’s been some time now not just since the last Princess Diaries movie, but also since we had word of the franchise revival. A year ago, it was revealed that both Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews were in line to return for Princess Diaries 3, over a decade since the second movie. A script had been written, and it looked like things were happening.
Fast forward to now, and the project is still active, but changes have been made. No longer is this one set for a theatrical release, we learn. Instead, the plan is now for a Disney+ streaming service release, and it’ll not by the sounds of it feature the original stars. Instead, the focus now will be on a spin-off featuring a half-sister to the character of Mia.
Lorna Osunsanmi is reportedly penning the new film, and there’s no word yet as to a director who who’s going to be starring in the new movie. It’s not definite that Andrews and Hathaway won’t at least make a brief appearance, but it sounds like the onus has switched somewhat.
