Fans of the John Wick series? Good news: the planned spin-off, Ballerina, has benefited from Emerald Fennell’s involvement.

Ana de Armas, star of the planned John Wick spin-off, Ballerina, has revealed to the world that Oscar-winner Emerald Fennell was called in to do some punch-up work on the project’s script. Fennell’s talents have been rightly lauded since her sensational and searing script for 2020’s Promising Young Woman led to the film earning all sorts of plaudits for empowering her female protagonist in new and interesting ways.

Whilst Ballerina, a straight-up action flick, is a different kind of film altogether, the plot threads into the punctuation nightmare that was John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum to set up a dynamic for the Ballerina character that isn’t a million miles away from the role that Carey Mulligan memorably portrayed in Promising Young Woman.

Whilst it isn’t yet known if Fennell’s contribution will be enough to earn her a writing credit as Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s punch-up work on No Time To Die did, fans of the John Wick films will likely be happy with the announcement, simply off the back of the quality of Promising Young Woman’'s script. Speaking with Ellede Armas who will star in Ballerina, said “it was really important for me to hire a female writer, because to that point when I got involved in the project, it was only the director, Len Wiseman, and another guy [Shay Hatten], and I was like, that’s not going to work.”

We’ll bring you more on Ballerina, including an expected production date, as we hear it. In the meantime though, the project appears to be bubbling along nicely with an exciting lead and a talented writing team.
