Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix to make a Napoleon movie

A deal has been struck to bring a new historical drama to the screen, charting young Napoleon’s rise as a military leader in late 18th century France.

Ridley Scott is a filmmaker that likes to keep busy, and despite wrapping up production on his current shoot, he already has one eye on not just the next project, but ones beyond that too.

Deadline is reporting that Scott has struck a fresh agreement with 20th Century Studios – with whom his production company, Scott Free Pictures, has a production deal. Together, they have agreed to collaborate on Kitbag, a historical drama charting Napoleon’s meteoric rise to power. Joaquin Phoenix has signed up to play the role of the ambitious and ruthless would-be ruler. The script is being written by David Scarpa, who penned Scott’s All The Money In The World.

Scott has always possessed a tremendous work ethic and he certainly isn’t slowing down, pandemic or otherwise. With production wrapping up on The Last Duel in Ireland this week, starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer, the director will begin shooting Gucci early next year. That one stars Lady Gaga, Al Pacino, Adam Driver and Robert De Niro. That movie will tell the tale of the execution of the head of the famous fashion house.

Also, Scott has been chatting recently about the possibility of making another Alien film, although his slate seems to be pretty full right now with Kitbag set to follow Gucci, which we’d imagine would fill up Scott’s plate for the bulk of 2021.

Still, expect updates on the director’s many projects as we have them. The Last Duel is currently set for a release in October next year.
