Pre-pubescent espionage hijinks are set to become the order of the day once more, with the announcement of more Spy Kids movies.
The successful Spy Kids franchise, which earned more than $550m worldwide across four films, is returning once more to our screens. Skydance Media has struck a deal with Netflix that will see the series’ original creator, Robert Rodriguez, return to write and direct as well.
Naturally, the new series will be a ‘reimagining’ rather than a direct sequel, as the titular Spy Kids, Alex Penavaga and Daryl Sabara are now in their mid-thirties. Of course, this would make them ripe for playing the parents of a new generation of Spy Kids in a gritty legacy sequel that would depict them as haunted and traumatised by their pre-pubescent espionage past. Don’t spread that one too widely though, as we’re saving it for when Netflix finally calls us to pitch to them.
The new Spy Kids film will mark the second family film that Rodriguez had directed for Netflix following 2020’s We Can be Heroes. No casting or plot details have been announced as of yet. More, of course, as we hear it…
