Dolph Lundgren reveals there are plans afoot for a Rocky spin-off movie about the character of Ivan Drago and yes please, go and make that.

Ordinarily, there’s something a bit eye-rolly about learning of character spin-off stories to keep franchises bubbling along. But two mitigating factors come into play with this particular tale. One, the spin-off is from the Rocky saga, and the Creed films show how that can work.

And secondly, the spin-off centres on Dolph Lundgren’s mighty Ivan Drago, the hero – right? – of the peerless Rocky IV. Lundgren reprised the role in the recent Creed II, but a fight in that movie between Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago was left on the cutting room floor.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Lundgren admitted “I thought it was a good moment. It was also a fan moment. It was a quick little fight, and I thought it worked”.

It got the chop when MGM and director Steven Caple Jr didn’t think it quite fitted the final cut in the end. But then Lundgren teased – in a very fine ‘by the way’ moment – that “I think there’s some talk about doing a whole spin off on Drago with MGM. So you may get more of that”.

Well, yes please Dolph. That’s all the information we’ve got on the project at the moment, but you can count on us to keep you up to date. We shall duly apply 1850 pounds of pressure to MGM to make this happen.
