An autumn 2022 release date is still on the cards for Sam Mendes’ next film – Empires Of Light – as it begins shooting on the South coast of England.

Sam Mendes has begun production on his next project following the hugely successful 1917. Mendes’ new film is titled Empire Of Light will see him reunite with regular collaborator Roger Deakins as cinematographer (Deakins has put his excellent podcast, Team Deakins, on hiatus to make the film). This marks the fifth pairing of Mendes and Deakins, following JarheadRevolutionary Road and Skyfall, as well as the aforementioned 1917.

Also working with Mendes on Empire Of Light will be Olivia Colman, who will take the lead in the project. It’ll also feature the talents of Micheal Ward, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Crystal Clarke, Tom Brooke, Hannah Onslow and Tanya Moodie. The film, which was announced back in April of last year is described as ‘a love story, set in and around a beautiful old cinema, on the South Coast of England in the 1980s.’

Searchlight Pictures will be distributing the film, whilst Empire Of Light will mark Mendes’ first outing as a solo writer on a project. The filmmaker will however be producing alongside usual collaborator, Pippa Harris. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
