Chris Rock reveals how he landed the job of Saw 9, and teases the new movie.

It was a pretty surprising piece of casting news, the day it was revealed that Chris Rock was to appear in the next Saw film. The movie – Saw 9, as we’re sure it won’t be called – is also based on an idea of Rock’s, and he duly wrote the story and takes one of the lead roles.

Chatting to Collider, he’s revealed how his involvement came about in the first place. “I was at a friend’s wedding”, he explained, “and they introduced me to the head of Lionsgate. I was like ‘Lionsgate? Oh, Saw’. And they called me up. I was just poking fun at the Lionsgate guy about Saw.”

Imagine if we all got a phone call about making sequels to films we were pulling the leg of. Twitter would basically be directing Cats 2 by now. That notwithstanding, Rock got to work, with Darren Lynn Bousman – who helmed the second, third and fourth Saw films – recruited for the new movie.

Rock’s teased that there will be a little humour in the comedy, but also that “Saw is really scary and really bloody. It’s a Saw movie. But every now and then, you take a little air out. It’s going to be good”.

Saw 9 is set to for release in May 2020. As we hear more, we’ll let you know…
