Both the Vue and Showcase chains in the UK confirm they’ll be staying open, although there may be some slight shifts in hours ahead.
Cineworld and Picturehouse cinemas around the UK have now shut their doors until next year. Odeon, meanwhile, is moving to three or four day opening across many of its sites. Empire Cinemas appears to have moved to weekend opening for the foreseeable future. And now we learn what Vue and Showcase is planning too.
The good news is that both chains are planning to keep their screens open. The inevitable news is that goes hand in hand with a dialling back of operating hours in some cases.
Showcase first. It’s made its position very clear on its Twitter feed…

And as for Vue…
We’re doing everything we can to protect our staff, keep customers entertained and venues open – all in the safest way possible. We will remain open, with hours changing at some venues. We’re keeping our team up to date first and we’ll keep you updated on here too. Find out more:

We understand that Vue will be moving to Friday to Monday opening across a small number of its venues around the UK. But that it’s trying to keep its sites open as much as it can. Not a single one of its cinemas will be shutting its doors totally this year.
More as we hear it. We respect the fact that Vue is talking to its staff first, and will leave the story there for now.
To everyone working in the cinema industry right now: our appreciation and thanks, and very best wishes.
