In other news, apparently Sony had been offering movie purchases and rentals via its PlayStation store.

For those of you who didn’t know that Sony offered movie and TV rentals via its PlayStation Store it, er, won’t be doing so for very long.

Both Sony and Microsoft have, to varying degrees, been trying to make their last few games consoles into home entertainment hubs, and then we all go and spoil it for them by using them to play games. Shame on us. Anyroad, Sony has now announced that its digital movie and TV store will be closing as of August 31st 2021.

“At SIE, we strive to provide the best entertainment experience for PlayStation fans, and that means evolving our offerings as customer needs change”, said Sony’s Vanessa Lee in a blog post. “We’ve seen tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles. With this shift in customer behavior, we have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store as of August 31, 2021”.

If you’re one of those who’s bought films and TV shows through your PlayStation, then Sony assures you that you’ll still be able to access them through your machine.

“We look forward to further enhancing the entertainment experience on PlayStation”, the blog signs off. So, er, there’s that.

The official announcement is here.
